One month to go!
The degree of urgency is increasing and so is the email flow between riders and crew. There is greater concentration now on all the vital details we need to cover before flying out to California.
Some flights still to book. Some accommodation details still to sort and support vehicles to hire. Riders need to check comparability of cycle spare parts, the list seems endless. Teleconferences are held now on a regular basis and WhatsApp is continually in use. We are all trying out our packing and collecting our items to take. ( see photo!)
We riders are still training hard - and hopefully getting appropriate rest as well. I have been reviewing personal progress over the last three months doing some intensive 2 week training periods and resting well in between. I’m in the last one of these now.
Outside of the training periods abroad, my key staple has been the sessions at Athletes Lab in the City where I have been doing key interval sessions of between 1-2 hrs and more recently more than one of those a day to keep up the motivation as well as the other sessions at home.
Then its time to take the foot off the pedal and start tapering. Just as well as I will need to be travelling to China one weekend on IAAF ( athletics ) business and then Portugal the last weekend for the World Trail Championships which, as IAU General Secretary, I help organise. Fortunately for both these other events I am involved in fits in nicely with my cycle taper. However I will be keeping in constant contact with the others during this period and they will be having a final Rider/crew training weekend at the beginning of June.
Its getting closer now
