Update from Lanzarote!
Updated: Mar 19, 2019
Three of us, Margaret, Eddie and myself have been spending the last 10 day upping our training here in Lanzarote at Club La Santa- which is complete heaven for triathletes and cyclists and our club has a training week every year in March. We each have our own schedules but meet for social rides and in the evenings on occasions.
For me – four weeks ago I didn’t think that I would be able to train properly outside when here which would have been extraordinarily frustrating! At the end of January, the latest x-rays showed a non-union of my fractured clavicle so this meant I would need to have it plated. Decision on Friday 1st February - operated on Monday 4th February!! My very sympathetic surgeon understood my requirements to get back enough use of my shoulder (whilst allowing it to heal) to be able to ride here in Lanzarote on some hilly rides and he gave me the best opportunity. I then got the go ahead to start full training the day before we left for Lanzarote. Phew. So out here I have been building steadily but strongly.
Latest update on training schedule now is, each day, to do three hilly sessions of approximately 1 hr long each with between 45 mins and 1 hr rest in between. Occasionally its enlivened by riding with other Serpies to a convenient coffee stop and then back. I did the first block of 4 days with a rest day on Tuesday – swimming in the salt lagoon as a refreshing alternative ( no wet suit - so a bit bracing at this time of year). Have now done the next batch of four days ( about 300 km) and contemplating whether to do a fifth before the next rest day.
Our Serpie group have been rather regarding us as going above and beyond but have been impressed with our focus. My day was made yesterday when our cycling coach Ain having caught me toiling up a hill on the island for the second time…..said he found us “inspirational” – and that’s from an elite Triathlete who has won Ironman Lanzarote!
Onward and upward!
